Sew the "Emma the Duck" Kids' T-Shirt: Your Perfect Beginner Project for Learning Appliqué

"I've wanted to sew a garment with an appliqué for a long time... but where do I start?"

We’ve probably discussed that even more often at the trade fair stand than the general "Can I even sew that?" insecurity, which we already reported on in the previous blog post. Because many of you are already confident about sewing itself, but have never appliquéd a motif – and that's where our Emma the Duck comes in. Being able to sew is already a super cool skill... but being able to appliqué takes it to a whole new level. So it's definitely worth giving it a try.

Our Emma the Duck has therefore been a classic for years, which we recommend to both sewing beginners and appliqué newcomers – as one of the most popular patterns for sewing a children's T-shirt. Today, we'll tell you exactly why this particular animal is so suitable for getting started and what you actually get when you buy our pattern.

So why is Emma the Duck the ideal first sewing project for practicing and learning appliqué?

Even though we generally always pay a lot of attention and love to detail, Emma the Duck is deliberately kept a bit simpler: clear, round shapes, a manageable number of appliqué pieces, and no tricky corners or tiny details that could frustrate and delay a beginner... plus a detailed and illustrated sewing guide with tips and tricks for appliqué. That's exactly what makes this children's shirt one of the patterns we recommend for getting started with T-shirt sewing – alongside our Svenja the Pig.

Nevertheless, Emma the Duck is not a "stripped-down" project. You learn everything you need for later, more complex Luanimals:

  • how to prepare and sew appliqués neatly
  • how to process jersey fabrics accordingly without everything getting distorted
  • how to work with step-by-step instructions that truly guide you

And because the basic technique for appliqué is always the same, with Emma you have laid the foundation for every subsequent appliqué project – whether for T-shirts, sweaters, or even trousers.

What exactly do you learn when appliquéing with Emma the Duck?

Appliqué sounds complicated to many at first – but it isn't, once you understand what's important and have found your favorite technique. With Emma the Duck, you practice on a relaxed motif:

  • cutting and preparing the individual appliqué pieces (beak, wings, eyes)
  • fixing before sewing, so nothing slips
  • neatly sewing on with a straight or zigzag stitch, depending on what your machine can do

You need this basic technique for every appliquéd Luanimals garment – once you've practiced it on Emma the Duck, every subsequent animal will be much easier for you.

What is included in the Emma the Duck pattern?

Whether it's a digital eBook or a paper pattern – with us, you get an all-inclusive package that lets you get started right away with sewing your children's T-shirt.

The digital pattern for Emma includes:

  • Pattern sheet in 6 double sizes (86–152 cm) with layers, so you can specifically print only your size
  • A4 file for home printers and A0 file for plotting at a copy shop
  • Beamer file (including calibration file), if you prefer to project instead of print or plot
  • Cutter/Plotter file for small details like eyes, if you use a cutting plotter
  • an illustrated step-by-step sewing instruction with tips and tricks from over 15 years of production experience – specifically for appliqué and processing jersey

So you decide how you want to work: with a finished paper pattern, printing it yourself, or even projecting. The pattern adapts to your workflow, not the other way around.

Who is this project suitable for?

In short: for anyone who fancies a relaxed first (or first appliquéd) garment that is unique and can be wonderfully individualized through fabric and color choices.

  • Absolute sewing beginners who have only sewn small accessories so far and want to venture into their first children's T-shirt
  • Advanced sewers who already sew but have never tried appliqué
  • Anyone looking for a beautiful upcycling project – Emma the Duck is great for using up fabric scraps or old favorite garments
