Wonder Clips by Snaply: 5 Sewing Tricks for Clean Seam Allowances, Jersey Hems, and Curves

A small, rather inconspicuous piece of plastic with magnets that clamps onto the fabric edge or our machine – and yet they have become one of the things we no longer want to do without on our sewing machine: Wonder Clacks from Snaply. You can see them in action in our new reel, but since it's naturally impossible to explain everything in detail there, we'll show you here at your leisure exactly how we use them in our daily sewing routine.
What are Wonder Clacks, actually?
For those who don't know them yet: Wonder Clacks are small, flat, magnetic sewing aids from Snaply, primarily invented as a replacement for pins, so that the fabric no longer needs to be pinned before sewing, but can be held together with the magnetic clacks. A big advantage, of course, is that this prevents permanent holes from pins in delicate fabrics, faux leather, leather, or jelly vinyl, similar to Wonder Clips.
1. Maintain precise seam allowance
We have a tape measure stuck to our industrial sewing machine so we always have an eye on the seam allowance. The needle is point zero on the ruler, and then it continues to the right with 1 cm, 2 cm... The Wonder Clacks hold the fabric edge exactly at the desired distance, as the fabric bumps against them during sewing. This way, we sew from start to finish with a clean, even seam allowance, without constant re-measuring. Especially for those who are still unsure about sewing garments, this is a trick that immediately provides more confidence.
2. Sewing thick fabrics and lazy cuffs
For thicker, doubled fabrics, such as a lazy cuff (here it's 4 layers of fabric), we like to stack several clacks on top of each other. This keeps the fabric exactly where it belongs and prevents it from slipping over the Wonder Clack during sewing. This is invaluable, especially when sewing several thick layers of fabric together.
3. Hemming
When hemming, we use the same principle: We iron the hem and guide it along the edge of the clack. This works perfectly, no matter what fabric. For jersey and other stretchy fabrics, we also use the elastic Seraflex threads from Mettler, which make the straight stitch stretchy so the hem doesn't tear when stretched. The threads also come in a large selection of really beautiful colors. Of course, you can also use them with a twin needle to create a truly professional-looking hem that delivers on its promise, even if you don't have an entire machine park at home.
4. Sewing clean curves
Curves are the nemesis for many sewers (especially beginners), particularly with necklines or sleeves. Our trick: With two Wonder Clacks, we create a small point, allowing us to close the seam cleanly and evenly, even on tight curves.
5. Fixing fabrics instead of pinning
The classic method at the end: fixing fabrics without pins. Our tip: Turn the clacks over so they don't stick to the metal of the sewing machine.
